Since Penicuik First organised the town’s first Christmas Market in 2015, the event has grown exponentially in every way. 2016 saw the spectacular addition of Christmas lights on the High Street. This year, they were expanded to run the length of the John Street precinct, too – a beautiful spectacle showing that Penicuik really punches above its weight when it comes to Christmas.
Beginning in the morning, the artisan stalls got “dressed up” with Christmas bunting and offered special festive goods in addition to the artisan food, drink and craft available monthly. The primary school children of Penicuik serenaded festive shoppers to open the event, before the rest of the day was filled by science experiments, pipe bands, buskers, puppet shows, face-painters, dancers, petting zoo, fairground rides, magicians and more… naturally, Santa was touring the town centre and giving presents from his Wee Hoose on the High Street.
Once everybody was good and jolly, Penicuik’s Citizen of the Year and Junior Hunter & Lass counted down to pull the magic plunger and illuminate the town centre with Penicuik First’s spectacular Christmas lights… after the switch-on, the Penicuik Silver Band played on, leading the town in a rousing and tuneful round of carolling and making sure everybody left in full Christmas spirit!
The Christmas Market and Switch-On is organised by the volunteer Penicuik First Board of Directors and made possible by the businesses of Penicuik town centre. The Board would like to thank the businesses for staying open late and really getting in the Christmas spirit, community groups getting involved, musicians and most of all everyone who came down from Penicuik and beyond, whether with friends or family, to make the event so special and such an enormous success!
