Big Bike Revival Comes to Midlothian

Local people in Midlothian are being encouraged to get back in the saddle and bring their old bikes into use as part of a national campaign, The Big Bike Revival. Gorebridge Community Development Trust along with Penicuik First have successfully secured funding to hold events throughout October to promote cycling and build on current initiatives across the county to get people enjoying the outdoors on their bike.

A fun and engaging programme has been developed in Midlothian for the Big Bike Revival, with events being centred in Gorebridge and Penicuik. The events will celebrate the joy of cycling with Dr Bike sessions, smoothie bike, cycling storytellers, bike skills and bike safety. Information will be provided on how to get cycling from cycling maps to free bike loans.

Events will kick-off on Friday 7th October with a free bike maintenance session and bike swap at Penicuik market from 1-3pm, which is being run in conjunction with local bike shop, Motivation and Penicuik First. Further fun bike-related events will be held on 29th October at Gorebridge Park, which will include a day of cycling activities, rides and storytelling.

Commenting on the plans, Stephanie Walker from Gorebridge Community Development Trust said:

“We really want to get people out enjoying the fabulous countryside all around us in Midlothian. October is a great time for people to bring out their bikes, get them fixed up at one of our workshops and come along on a fun ride. Gorebridge is being transformed thanks to sustainable transport options, like the Borders Railway, and we want to build on that and encourage people to start using their bikes to get around town, have fun or ride to school or work.”

Local cycling campaigner, Ross Laird, added: “Penicuik has already taken the initiative to kick0start a number of cycling activities. We had a fantastic response from the community to our recent cycling events and maintenance sessions run by Penicuik First and RUTS. The Big Bike Revival programme gives us a chance to build on that momentum with yet more events centred in and around Penicuik.”
